400.

For the first time in human history, carbon dioxide levels reached an average daily level of 400 parts per million, as reported this week. The last time the atmosphere contained this much carbon dioxide was 3 million years ago.

This new data comes from the Mauna Loa observatory and a set of data continuously collected since 1958: The Keeling curve. This represents almost a 50% increase since the beginning of the industrial age. Although there is some seasonal variability (that little jagged edge) due to seasonal vegetation sucking up a bit of the CO2 every year, the trend is clear … and it’s not good.

So what does that mean? The effects are not something to look forward to. The last time the CO2 level was this high, way back when, here’s what the world was like:

Back then, it was a different world. Global average temperatures during the period were between 5.4 and 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit (3 to 4 degrees Celsius) higher than today, and sea level was as much as 131 feet (40 meters) higher in some places.

While the average (which is calculated from levels over the past several days) has since dropped back to 399 (as of today), the saddest part is that both of those numbers are unacceptable. 400 is just a little more catchy. With 401 and beyond right around the corner, what now? We must cut emissions as fast as humanly possible.

Because we are mighty humans, and it is possible.

This really is bad news for humanity and all life on the planet. For the first time in about 3 million years the atmospheric concentration of CO2 has exceeded 400 ppm. It’s not to late to change this trend. There is still hope. But that means there’s that much more work to be done.

For me, the biggest thing I can realistically do right now is change where my electricity comes from. My local business is Clean Currents, but I’m sure there are options out there for anyone willing to look. As they say, vote with your dollar, but also be an advocate for science and reality based legislation.

Guys this is really important.

CBS just posted an article saying that 20 states have petitioned to secede from the American union now that Obama is president again.This means, that if they reach 25,000 signatures in 30 days, the petition can be reviewed by the government administration.

The states that have petitioned to secede are as the following: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

Texas already has over 22,000 signatures and if they have enough support they could very well be removed from the United States.

This is very important guys, please signal boost this, tell your parents. This effects the entire country and everyone needs to know.

I’m in Georgia and I’m actually terrified.

The states are acting so childish..seriously…President Obama won…get over it.

Let us interject some sensibility into this discussion. Firstly, there is no established mechanism by which a state can lawfully secede from the union. Secondly, the 25000 signatures are necessary only for a response from the president. And thirdly, those that have signed these petitions make up a relatively small portion of even the electorate that voted against President Obama.

Usually I am linking to other people’s stuff, today I’m actually posting something of my own. My girls and I are huge fans of the anime films Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Actually, we are pretty much fans of all Studio Ghibli films.
